# Oneseed juniper AGB from equivalent stem diameter (dry field measurement)

Aboveground biomass equation for Juniperus monosperma, United States, from Cunliffe et al. 2020. 15 trees, DBH 3.3–47.2 cm. Listed on Tree Allometrics, a free library of tree allometric equations, each quoted from the source that published it.

## Equation

As printed in Cunliffe et al. 2020 (Table 2):

> ESDDry (cm)  Y = a * Xb  0.005 (0.007)  3.038 (0.352)  38.55  15

In this library's units, ready to compute (aboveground biomass in kg):

```
Aboveground biomass = 0.005 * DRC^3.038
```

Inputs: DRC = Root collar / stem base diameter (cm).
The source's own form: 0.005 * ESDDry^3.038, with ESDDry in cm; output in kg.

## What it covers

- Output: Aboveground biomass, kg
- Taxon: Juniperus monosperma (species), family Cupressaceae; conifer
- Where: central New Mexico (34.429N, 105.861W). Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/cunliffe-2020-esd-dry/#where
- Biomes: dryland
- Stand: natural
- Trees measured: 15. Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/cunliffe-2020-esd-dry/#n_trees
- DBH range: 3.3–47.2 cm. Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/cunliffe-2020-esd-dry/#dbh
- Method: power model, nonlinear least squares (Gauss-Newton). Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/cunliffe-2020-esd-dry/#method
- Verification: read in the original source
- Last checked: 2026-11-02. Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/cunliffe-2020-esd-dry/#checked_at

A missing fit statistic is one the source doesn't state, or that we haven't recorded; it is never estimated. Outside the stated DBH range or region, the equation is an extrapolation.

## The facts, in the source's words

**Equation** (Table 2):

> ESDDry (cm)  Y = a * Xb  0.005 (0.007)  3.038 (0.352)  38.55  15

Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/cunliffe-2020-esd-dry/#equation

**DBH range** (Table 1 (min, max, N=15)):

> ESDDry 3.3 47.2

Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/cunliffe-2020-esd-dry/#quote-fit-dbh

**Our note:** The predictor is ESD, the equivalent root-collar diameter: square root of the sum of squared root-collar diameters (DRC) of all stems of the individual, bark included. Mapped to canonical DRC (equal to the DRC for a single-stem tree). AGB includes wood and leaf and twig tissue, in kg dry mass. The coefficient a is printed to only three decimals, so predictions for small trees are coarse. Range fields hold the ESD range, not DBH.

## Checks this equation passes

On every build, the library's form and the source's own form (in its units) must both give these values within 1%.

| Inputs | Expected | We get | From |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| DRC = 10 | 5.46 | 5.46 | Computed from the printed form: hand-computed from the published form |
| DRC = 20 | 44.8 | 44.8 | Computed from the printed form: hand-computed from the published form |
| DRC = 40 | 368 | 368 | Computed from the printed form: hand-computed from the published form |

The calculator on the page shows carbon as biomass × 0.47 (IPCC 2006 Guidelines, Vol. 4, Ch. 4, Table 4.3) and CO₂e as carbon × 44/12.
