# Oneseed juniper AGB from maximum canopy height

Aboveground biomass equation for Juniperus monosperma, United States, from Cunliffe et al. 2020. 18 trees. Listed on Tree Allometrics, a free library of tree allometric equations, each quoted from the source that published it.

## Equation

As printed in Cunliffe et al. 2020 (Table 2):

> HMax (m)  Y = a * Xb  0.773 (0.587)  4.347 (0.520)  37.18  18

In this library's units, ready to compute (aboveground biomass in kg):

```
Aboveground biomass = 0.773 * H^4.347
```

Inputs: H = Total tree height (m).
The source's own form: 0.773 * HMax^4.347, with HMax in m; output in kg.

## What it covers

- Output: Aboveground biomass, kg
- Taxon: Juniperus monosperma (species), family Cupressaceae; conifer
- Where: central New Mexico (34.429N, 105.861W). Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/cunliffe-2020-hmax/#where
- Biomes: dryland
- Stand: natural
- Trees measured: 18. Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/cunliffe-2020-hmax/#n_trees
- Method: power model, nonlinear least squares (Gauss-Newton). Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/cunliffe-2020-hmax/#method
- Verification: read in the original source

A missing fit statistic is one the source doesn't state, or that we haven't recorded; it is never estimated. Outside the stated DBH range or region, the equation is an extrapolation.

## The facts, in the source's words

**Equation** (Table 2):

> HMax (m)  Y = a * Xb  0.773 (0.587)  4.347 (0.520)  37.18  18

Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/cunliffe-2020-hmax/#equation

**Trees measured** (Results):

> The 18 trees harvested

Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/cunliffe-2020-hmax/#quote-fit-n-trees

**Our note:** HMax is the maximum canopy height of the tree, taken as total height H. Trees in the study were 0.62 to 5.83 m (Table 1, all 20 measured trees, so not given as a fit range). The canopy-area equations in Table 2 have no canonical input and are not included.

## Checks this equation passes

On every build, the library's form and the source's own form (in its units) must both give these values within 1%.

| Inputs | Expected | We get | From |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| H = 2 | 15.7 | 15.7 | Computed from the printed form: hand-computed from the published form |
| H = 4 | 320 | 320 | Computed from the printed form: hand-computed from the published form |
| H = 5.5 | 1,278 | 1,278 | Computed from the printed form: hand-computed from the published form |

The calculator on the page shows carbon as biomass × 0.47 (IPCC 2006 Guidelines, Vol. 4, Ch. 4, Table 4.3) and CO₂e as carbon × 44/12.
