# Euterpe precatoria stem mass from D2Hrho

Stem biomass equation for Euterpe precatoria, Brazil, from Da Silva et al. 2015. 20 trees, DBH 3.9–12.7 cm. Listed on Tree Allometrics, a free library of tree allometric equations, each quoted from the source that published it.

## Equation

As printed in Da Silva et al. 2015 (Table 1 (columns lng, h, adjusted R2; model ln y = ln g + h ln x, Eq. 2)):

> Ms D2Hρ −2.11 (−2.43–−1.79) 0.90 (0.84–0.96) 0.982

In this library's units, ready to compute (stem biomass in kg):

```
Stem biomass = exp(-2.11) * (D^2 * Hstem * rho)^0.90
```

Inputs: D = Diameter at breast height (1.3 m) (cm); Hstem = Palm stem height, ground to the lowest leaf (m); rho = Wood density (oven-dry mass / green volume) (g/cm³).
The source's own form: exp(-2.11) * (D^2 * H * rho)^0.90, with D in cm, H in m, rho in g/cm3; output in kg.

- Trees measured: 20. Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/da-silva-2015-ms-d2hrho/#n_trees
- DBH range: 3.9–12.7 cm. Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/da-silva-2015-ms-d2hrho/#dbh
- Height range: 2.3–16.4 m. Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/da-silva-2015-ms-d2hrho/#height
- Method: Power function fitted on ln-ln by standardized major axis (SMA). Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/da-silva-2015-ms-d2hrho/#method
- Verification: read in the original source

A missing fit statistic is one the source doesn't state, or that we haven't recorded; it is never estimated. Outside the stated DBH range or region, the equation is an extrapolation.

## The facts, in the source's words

**Equation** (Table 1 (columns lng, h, adjusted R2; model ln y = ln g + h ln x, Eq. 2)):

> Ms D2Hρ −2.11 (−2.43–−1.79) 0.90 (0.84–0.96) 0.982

Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/da-silva-2015-ms-d2hrho/#equation

**Trees measured** (Abstract):

> We harvested twenty palms

Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/da-silva-2015-ms-d2hrho/#quote-fit-n-trees

**Our note:** H is stem height from the stem base to the tip of the meristem (palm, fronds not included), mapped to canonical H. rho is the measured stem specific gravity (oven-dry mass / green volume), which the authors found rises with size, so applying this to unmeasured palms needs a rho estimate. Dry mass (fresh mass converted with component water content, dried at 65 C). SMA fit, no correction factor stated. Recommended: best predictor for Ms (adjusted R2 0.982 in Table 1). Coefficient is exp(lng) from Table 1 as printed. Not included: leaf mass (needs frond count Nf, not canonical) and root mass (Table 1 row and text disagree on the predictor). Palm height is measured from stem base to the meristem tip, fronds excluded; mapped to Hstem (closest canonical variable), not total height.

## Checks this equation passes

On every build, the library's form and the source's own form (in its units) must both give these values within 1%.

| Inputs | Expected | We get | From |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| D = 8, rho = 0.4, Hstem = 10 | 17.8 | 17.8 | Computed from the printed form: computed from Table 1 ln g and h |
| D = 12, rho = 0.5, Hstem = 15 | 65.1 | 65.1 | Computed from the printed form: computed from Table 1 ln g and h |

The calculator on the page shows carbon as biomass × 0.47 (IPCC 2006 Guidelines, Vol. 4, Ch. 4, Table 4.3) and CO₂e as carbon × 44/12.
