# Larch (Larix gmelinii) aboveground biomass from D and H (sum of components, System 2)

Aboveground biomass equation for Larix gmelinii, China, from Dong et al. 2016. 90 trees, DBH 7.6–35.7 cm. Listed on Tree Allometrics, a free library of tree allometric equations, each quoted from the source that published it.

## Equation

As printed in Dong et al. 2016 (Eq. (2), additivity constraints):

> lnWa = ln(Ws + Wb + Wf) + εa; lnWt = ln(Wr + Ws + Wb + Wf) + εt

In this library's units, ready to compute (aboveground biomass in kg):

```
Aboveground biomass = exp(-4.5363 + 1.7008 * ln(D) + 1.4804 * ln(H)) + exp(-3.3632 + 2.6728 * ln(D) - 0.7052 * ln(H)) + exp(-2.2879 + 1.3369 * ln(D) - 0.0922 * ln(H))
```

Inputs: D = Diameter at breast height (1.3 m) (cm); H = Total tree height (m).
The source's own form: exp(-4.5363 + 1.7008 * ln(D) + 1.4804 * ln(H)) + exp(-3.3632 + 2.6728 * ln(D) - 0.7052 * ln(H)) + exp(-2.2879 + 1.3369 * ln(D) - 0.0922 * ln(H)), with D in cm, H in m; output in kg.

A missing fit statistic is one the source doesn't state, or that we haven't recorded; it is never estimated. Outside the stated DBH range or region, the equation is an extrapolation.

## The facts, in the source's words

**Equation** (Eq. (2), additivity constraints):

> lnWa = ln(Ws + Wb + Wf) + εa; lnWt = ln(Wr + Ws + Wb + Wf) + εt

Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/dong-2016-larch-sys2-agb/#equation

**Trees measured** (Section 2.2):

> a total of 114 Korean pine trees, 90 larch trees, and 85 Mongolian pine trees were destructively sampled

**Our note:** Larch (Larix gmelinii) plantations, System 2 (D and H) of Table 4: ln W = a* + b* ln D + c* ln H, natural logarithm, coefficients as printed (a*, b*, c*). No correction factor is stated in the paper, none applied. n and D/H ranges from Table 2 (sample statistics of the fitted trees). Stem includes bark; roots exclude fine roots <5 mm. No R2 recorded (adjusted R2 only). The paper defines this total as the exact sum of its component equations (additivity constraint); the expression is that sum with the Table 4 component coefficients, not a separately printed coefficient set.

## Checks this equation passes

On every build, the library's form and the source's own form (in its units) must both give these values within 1%.

The calculator on the page shows carbon as biomass × 0.47 (IPCC 2006 Guidelines, Vol. 4, Ch. 4, Table 4.3) and CO₂e as carbon × 44/12.
