# White birch aboveground biomass from D only (MS-2) (sum of components, Table 5)

Aboveground biomass equation for Betula platyphylla, China, from Dong et al. 2018. 108 trees, DBH 1.4–20.5 cm. Listed on Tree Allometrics, a free library of tree allometric equations, each quoted from the source that published it.

## Equation

As printed in Dong et al. 2018 (Eq. (14), additive constraints):

> Wa = Ws + Wb + Wf + εa; Wt = Wr + Ws + Wb + Wf + εt

In this library's units, ready to compute (aboveground biomass in kg):

```
Aboveground biomass = exp(-2.5622 + 2.515 * ln(D)) + exp(-5.1593 + 2.8615 * ln(D)) + exp(-5.5644 + 2.479 * ln(D))
```

Inputs: D = Diameter at breast height (1.3 m) (cm).
The source's own form: exp(-2.5622) * D^2.515 + exp(-5.1593) * D^2.8615 + exp(-5.5644) * D^2.479, with D in cm; output in kg.

- Height range: 3.1–21 m. Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/dong-2018-birch-ms2-agb/#height
- Method: seemingly unrelated regression (SUR), additive system, W = exp(b0) D^b1 H^b2. Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/dong-2018-birch-ms2-agb/#method

A missing fit statistic is one the source doesn't state, or that we haven't recorded; it is never estimated. Outside the stated DBH range or region, the equation is an extrapolation.

## The facts, in the source's words

**Equation** (Eq. (14), additive constraints):

> Wa = Ws + Wb + Wf + εa; Wt = Wr + Ws + Wb + Wf + εt

Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/dong-2018-birch-ms2-agb/#equation

**Trees measured** (Section 2.2):

> 138 Dahurian larch trees and 108 white birch trees were destructively sampled

**Our note:** White birch, MS-2: the paper defines this total as the sum of its component equations (Eq. 14 constraints), with coefficients of the component rows in Table 5; the expression is that sum, not a separately printed formula. Stem includes bark; roots exclude fine roots <5 mm.

## Checks this equation passes

On every build, the library's form and the source's own form (in its units) must both give these values within 1%.

| Inputs | Expected | We get | From |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| D = 4 | 2.94 | 2.94 | Computed from the printed form: computed from the published form (coefficients as printed) |
| D = 10 | 30.6 | 30.6 | Computed from the printed form: computed from the published form (coefficients as printed) |
| D = 18 | 138 | 138 | Computed from the printed form: computed from the published form (coefficients as printed) |

The calculator on the page shows carbon as biomass × 0.47 (IPCC 2006 Guidelines, Vol. 4, Ch. 4, Table 4.3) and CO₂e as carbon × 44/12.
