# Vachellia tortilis combined leaf and twig biomass (Model 5)

Foliage biomass equation for Vachellia tortilis, Ethiopia, from Eshete et al. 2026. 15 trees. Listed on Tree Allometrics, a free library of tree allometric equations, each quoted from the source that published it.

**Not fully checked:** Table 5 gives M5 as a DBH-and-height model, while Table 1 defines M5 as stump diameter squared. This record uses Table 5; confirm the intended form and coefficients with the authors before relying on it.

## Equation

As printed in Eshete et al. 2026 (Table 5, Models and Coefficients columns, Leaf and twig Model 5 row, p. 9):

> Y = β₁d^β₂h; β₁ = 3.316, β₂ = 0.275

In this library's units, ready to compute (foliage biomass in kg):

```
Foliage biomass = 3.316 * D^0.275 * H
```

Inputs: D = Diameter at breast height (1.3 m) (cm); H = Total tree height (m).
The source's own form: 3.316 * d^0.275 * h, with d in cm, h in m; output in kg.

A missing fit statistic is one the source doesn't state, or that we haven't recorded; it is never estimated. Outside the stated DBH range or region, the equation is an extrapolation.

**Our note:** Nonlinear power regression on the original scale; no back-transformation or correction is stated or applied. d is diameter at breast height, 1.3 m, and h is total height. For multi-stemmed trees use the square root of the sum of squared stem diameters at the relevant height (Eq. 1). The harvested stump-diameter range was 3.2–44.5 cm. This foliage component is the combined dry mass of leaves and twigs. This record uses the component-specific form in Table 5.

## Checks this equation passes

On every build, the library's form and the source's own form (in its units) must both give these values within 1%.

| Inputs | Expected | We get | From |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| D = 15, H = 3 | 20.9 | 20.9 | Computed from the printed form: Computed from the printed Table 5 coefficients; no individual published prediction with all inputs is provided. |

The calculator on the page shows carbon as biomass × 0.47 (IPCC 2006 Guidelines, Vol. 4, Ch. 4, Table 4.3) and CO₂e as carbon × 44/12.
