# Mauritia flexuosa (aguaje) AGB from stem height

Aboveground biomass equation for Mauritia flexuosa, Peru, from Goodman et al. 2013. 16 trees, DBH 19–36 cm. Listed on Tree Allometrics, a free library of tree allometric equations, each quoted from the source that published it.

## Equation

As printed in Goodman et al. 2013 (Table 3):

> Mauritia ln(AGB) ln(Hstem) 2.4647 1.3777 0.897 16 0.273

In this library's units, ready to compute (aboveground biomass in kg):

```
Aboveground biomass = 1.038 * exp(2.4647 + 1.3777 * ln(Hstem))
```

Inputs: Hstem = Palm stem height, ground to the lowest leaf (m).
The source's own form: 1.038 * exp(2.4647 + 1.3777 * ln(Hstem)), with Hstem in m; output in kg.

A missing fit statistic is one the source doesn't state, or that we haven't recorded; it is never estimated. Outside the stated DBH range or region, the equation is an extrapolation.

## The facts, in the source's words

**Correction factor** (Section 2.4, lines 220–221 (author post-print)):

> A correction factor, exp(RSE2/2), was applied to biomass estimates from logarithmically transformed models (Baskerville, 1972).

**Our note:** Height-only model: Hstem = stem height to the base of the lowest leaf (m), fitted range 5.1–30.5 m. The table row is labelled 'Mauritia'; all sampled individuals were M. flexuosa. Table 3 also gives a belowground model for this species. Correction factor multiplied in.

## Checks this equation passes

On every build, the library's form and the source's own form (in its units) must both give these values within 1%.

| Inputs | Expected | We get | From |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Hstem = 15 | 509 | 509 | Computed from the printed form: computed from the Table 3 coefficients times exp(RSE²/2) |

The calculator on the page shows carbon as biomass × 0.47 (IPCC 2006 Guidelines, Vol. 4, Ch. 4, Table 4.3) and CO₂e as carbon × 44/12.
