# Cryptomeria japonica Stem (wood + bark) from DBH (Table 3)

Stem biomass equation for Cryptomeria japonica, South Korea, from Jung et al. 2014. 18 trees, DBH 13–28 cm. Listed on Tree Allometrics, a free library of tree allometric equations, each quoted from the source that published it.

## Equation

As printed in Jung et al. 2014 (Materials and Methods, Data analysis):

> Y = exp [a + b*ln(X)]

In this library's units, ready to compute (stem biomass in kg):

```
Stem biomass = 1.001 * exp(-2.629 + 2.278 * ln(D))
```

Inputs: D = Diameter at breast height (1.3 m) (cm).
The source's own form: 1.001 * exp(-2.629 + 2.278 * ln(DBH)), with DBH in cm; output in kg.

- DBH range: 13–28 cm. Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/jung-2014-stem/#dbh
- Height range: 9–14 m. Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/jung-2014-stem/#height
- R²: 0.939. Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/jung-2014-stem/#r2
- Correction factor: 1.001 (applied). Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/jung-2014-stem/#cf
- Method: log-log regression with Sprugel correction factor (SAS 9.1). Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/jung-2014-stem/#method
- Verification: read in the original source

A missing fit statistic is one the source doesn't state, or that we haven't recorded; it is never estimated. Outside the stated DBH range or region, the equation is an extrapolation.

## The facts, in the source's words

**Equation** (Materials and Methods, Data analysis):

> Y = exp [a + b*ln(X)]

Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/jung-2014-stem/#equation

**Equation** (Table 3 (columns a, b, RMSE, R2, CF)):

> Stem -2.629 2.278 0.139 0.939 1.001

Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/jung-2014-stem/#quote-expression

**Trees measured** (Data collection):

> A total of 18 representative sample trees were selected based on their DBH class.

Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/jung-2014-stem/#quote-fit-n-trees

**Smallest DBH** (Table 1):

> DBH (cm) 20 (13-28)

Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/jung-2014-stem/#quote-fit-dbh-min-cm

**Our note:** Y = CF * exp[a + b*ln(X)], Y in kg, X = DBH in cm; the Sprugel correction factor CF = exp(SEE^2/2) from Table 3 is applied (text: Sprugel correction factors were used to correct the bias). Table 3 prints no n per equation; n = 18 harvested sample trees (roots of all 18 reported in Table 2). Single 40-year-old stand.

## Checks this equation passes

On every build, the library's form and the source's own form (in its units) must both give these values within 1%.

| Inputs | Expected | We get | From |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| D = 15 | 34.5 | 34.5 | Computed from the printed form: computed from the Table 3 coefficients and CF |
| D = 25 | 110.5 | 110.5 | Computed from the printed form: computed from the Table 3 coefficients and CF |

The calculator on the page shows carbon as biomass × 0.47 (IPCC 2006 Guidelines, Vol. 4, Ch. 4, Table 4.3) and CO₂e as carbon × 44/12.
