# Common mangrove above-ground weight (Eq. 9)

Aboveground biomass equation for Mangroves (10 species: Rhizophora, Bruguiera, Ceriops, Avicennia, Sonneratia, Xylocarpus), Thailand, Indonesia, from Komiyama et al. 2005. 104 trees, DBH 5–48.9 cm. Listed on Tree Allometrics, a free library of tree allometric equations, each quoted from the source that published it.

## Equation

As printed in Komiyama et al. 2005 (Eq. 9, p. 475):

> Wtop = 0.251ρ D^2.46

In this library's units, ready to compute (aboveground biomass in kg):

```
Aboveground biomass = 0.251 * rho * D^2.46
```

Inputs: rho = Wood density (oven-dry mass / green volume) (g/cm³); D = Diameter at breast height (1.3 m) (cm).
The source's own form: 0.251 * rho * D^2.46, with rho in g/cm3, D in cm; output in kg.

A missing fit statistic is one the source doesn't state, or that we haven't recorded; it is never estimated. Outside the stated DBH range or region, the equation is an extrapolation.

## The facts, in the source's words

**Equation** (Eq. 9, p. 475):

> Wtop = 0.251ρ D^2.46

Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/komiyama-2005-eq9-agb/#equation

**Fit** (Table 4 (equation before CF)):

> Wtop = 0.247ρ (D²)^1.23 0.979 0.085 1.017

Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/komiyama-2005-eq9-agb/#quote-fit

**Trees measured** (Fig. 3 caption):

> The tree samples were 104 individuals including 10 species.

Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/komiyama-2005-eq9-agb/#quote-fit-n-trees

**Our note:** Eq. 9 is Table 4's 0.247ρ(D²)^1.23 multiplied by CF 1.017. D = DR0.3 (diameter 30 cm above the highest prop root) for Rhizophoraceae and dbh for other species; Wtop excludes Rhizophora prop roots. ρ is wood density in t/m3 (= g/cm3). Trees with D > 5 cm.

## Checks this equation passes

On every build, the library's form and the source's own form (in its units) must both give these values within 1%.

| Inputs | Expected | We get | From |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| D = 20, rho = 0.8 | 319 | 319 | Computed from the printed form: hand-computed from the published form |
| D = 40, rho = 0.7 | 1,534 | 1,534 | Computed from the printed form: hand-computed from the published form |

The calculator on the page shows carbon as biomass × 0.47 (IPCC 2006 Guidelines, Vol. 4, Ch. 4, Table 4.3) and CO₂e as carbon × 44/12.
