# Avocado on Kenyan farms, mean DBH (Eq. 2)

Aboveground biomass equation for Persea americana, Kenya, from Kuyah et al. 2024. DBH 5.3–96.2 cm. Listed on Tree Allometrics, a free library of tree allometric equations, each quoted from the source that published it.

**From a secondary source, not the original:** we could only read this equation in https://www.cifor-icraf.org/publications/pdf/briefs/Carbon-Sequestration-in-Fruit-Trees.pdf (another paper, brief or compilation). Check it against the original before relying on it.

## Equation

As printed in Kuyah et al. 2024 (CIFOR-ICRAF brief, Table 2):

> Eq. 2 AGB = 0.0638 × μDBH^2.5435 5.3–96.2 2–52 0.86 18.4

In this library's units, ready to compute (aboveground biomass in kg):

```
Aboveground biomass = 0.0638 * D^2.5435
```

Inputs: D = Diameter at breast height (1.3 m) (cm).
The source's own form: 0.0638 * DBH^2.5435, with DBH in cm; output in kg.

## What it covers

- Output: Aboveground biomass, kg
- Taxon: Persea americana (species), family Lauraceae; broadleaf
- Where: Smallholder farms, Makueni and Kiambu counties, Kenya. Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/kuyah-2024-avocado/#where
- Biomes: tropical
- Stand: agroforestry
- DBH range: 5.3–96.2 cm. Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/kuyah-2024-avocado/#dbh
- R²: 0.86. Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/kuyah-2024-avocado/#r2
- Method: power model. Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/kuyah-2024-avocado/#method
- Verification: from a secondary source (https://www.cifor-icraf.org/publications/pdf/briefs/Carbon-Sequestration-in-Fruit-Trees.pdf)
- Last checked: 2026-11-01. Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/kuyah-2024-avocado/#checked_at

A missing fit statistic is one the source doesn't state, or that we haven't recorded; it is never estimated. Outside the stated DBH range or region, the equation is an extrapolation.

## The facts, in the source's words

**Equation** (CIFOR-ICRAF brief, Table 2):

> Eq. 2 AGB = 0.0638 × μDBH^2.5435 5.3–96.2 2–52 0.86 18.4

**Equation** (CIFOR-ICRAF brief, key messages):

> avocado trees (AGB = 0.0638 × DBH^2.5435)

**Our note:** Read from the CIFOR-ICRAF brief (Muthuri, Kuyah, Njoki, Wakaba 2024), not the paper. The brief writes μDBH (mean DBH, for multi-stemmed trees) in its table; tree age 2-52 years; MAPE 18.4%. An infographic version reportedly shows 0.0648: confirm against the paper. Mango Eq. 1 uses mean primary-branch diameter (μDPB) and is not included.

## Checks this equation passes

On every build, the library's form and the source's own form (in its units) must both give these values within 1%.

| Inputs | Expected | We get | From |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| D = 20 | 130 | 130 | Computed from the printed form: hand-computed from the published form |
| D = 50 | 1,337 | 1,337 | Computed from the printed form: hand-computed from the published form |

The calculator on the page shows carbon as biomass × 0.47 (IPCC 2006 Guidelines, Vol. 4, Ch. 4, Table 4.3) and CO₂e as carbon × 44/12.
