# Mopane total AGB from D²H (TM3)

Aboveground biomass equation for Colophospermum mopane, Mozambique, from Lisboa et al. 2025. 120 trees, DBH 5–109 cm. Listed on Tree Allometrics, a free library of tree allometric equations, each quoted from the source that published it.

## Equation

As printed in Lisboa et al. 2025 (Table 6, model TM3, p. 10):

> ln(Y) = ln(a) + bln(D2H) + Ɛ TM3 – 2.373 ± 0.162 (– 2.696 to − 2.050) 0.916 ± 0.021 (0.875 to 0.957)

In this library's units, ready to compute (aboveground biomass in kg):

```
Aboveground biomass = exp(-2.373 + 0.916 * ln(D^2 * H))
```

Inputs: D = Diameter at breast height (1.3 m) (cm); H = Total tree height (m).
The source's own form: exp(-2.373 + 0.916 * ln(D^2 * H)), with D in cm, H in m; output in kg.

A missing fit statistic is one the source doesn't state, or that we haven't recorded; it is never estimated. Outside the stated DBH range or region, the equation is an extrapolation.

## The facts, in the source's words

**Equation** (Table 6, model TM3, p. 10):

> ln(Y) = ln(a) + bln(D2H) + Ɛ TM3 – 2.373 ± 0.162 (– 2.696 to − 2.050) 0.916 ± 0.021 (0.875 to 0.957)

**Largest DBH** (Table 3, row ID 1 (this study), p. 7):

> D range (cm) 5–109

**h max m** (Table 4 (Mabalane and Tambara rows; min and max combined), p. 8):

> Total tree height (m) 4.0 9.3 21.6 52 / 3.8 8.3 14.6 32

**R²** (Table 7, model TM3, p. 10 (printed as a percentage)):

> TM3 ... R-square 95.91

**Our note:** Model 3 (D²H); best by Akaike weight among the three total AGB models per the authors. Total aboveground biomass is the sum of stem, branches (min. 3 cm) and foliage, so leaves are included. The printed intercept is ln(a); no back-transformation correction factor is stated in the paper and none is applied. n = 120 sampled trees (Methods p. 3, Table 3), but Table 5 heads the total-AGB column 'n = 84', so the fitted n may be 84.

## Checks this equation passes

On every build, the library's form and the source's own form (in its units) must both give these values within 1%.

| Inputs | Expected | We get | From |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| D = 20, H = 9 | 169 | 169 | Computed from the printed form: computed from the published form |

The calculator on the page shows carbon as biomass × 0.47 (IPCC 2006 Guidelines, Vol. 4, Ch. 4, Table 4.3) and CO₂e as carbon × 44/12.
