# Tanzania lowland forest, Dindili and Rondo combined, D, H and wood density (model 10)

Aboveground biomass equation for Mixed lowland forest tree species, Tanzania, from Mugasha et al. 2016. 60 trees. Listed on Tree Allometrics, a free library of tree allometric equations, each quoted from the source that published it.

## Equation

As printed in Mugasha et al. 2016 (Table 5 (columns: a, b, c, error, RMSE, R2, AIC)):

> General 10 0.0873 0.9458 0.559 × dbh1.673 567.9 0.87 840.94

In this library's units, ready to compute (aboveground biomass in kg):

```
Aboveground biomass = 0.0873 * (rho * D^2 * H)^0.9458
```

Inputs: rho = Wood density (oven-dry mass / green volume) (g/cm³); D = Diameter at breast height (1.3 m) (cm); H = Total tree height (m).
The source's own form: 0.0873 * (WD * DBH^2 * HT)^0.9458, with WD in g/cm3, DBH in cm, HT in m; output in kg.

## What it covers

- Output: Aboveground biomass, kg
- Taxon: Mixed lowland forest tree species (mixed species); broadleaf
- Where: Dindili (Morogoro) and Rondo (Lindi) lowland forests, Tanzania. Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/mugasha-2016-agb-general-m10/#where
- Biomes: tropical
- Stand: natural
- Trees measured: 60. Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/mugasha-2016-agb-general-m10/#n_trees
- R²: 0.87. Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/mugasha-2016-agb-general-m10/#r2
- Method: maximum-likelihood non-linear regression with variance function. Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/mugasha-2016-agb-general-m10/#method
- Verification: read in the original source
- Last checked: 2026-11-02. Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/mugasha-2016-agb-general-m10/#checked_at

A missing fit statistic is one the source doesn't state, or that we haven't recorded; it is never estimated. Outside the stated DBH range or region, the equation is an extrapolation.

## The facts, in the source's words

**Equation** (Table 5 (columns: a, b, c, error, RMSE, R2, AIC)):

> General 10 0.0873 0.9458 0.559 × dbh1.673 567.9 0.87 840.94

Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/mugasha-2016-agb-general-m10/#equation

**Units** (Section 2.6.2):

> where Y is the volume (m3 tree−1) or biomass (kg tree−1); WD is wood basic density (g cm−3); a, b, and c are model parameters to be estimated.

**Trees measured** (Section 2.3):

> A total of 30 trees were selected from each site

Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/mugasha-2016-agb-general-m10/#quote-fit-n-trees

**Our note:** Fitted by maximum-likelihood non-linear regression with a variance function, no back-transformation. Table 5 column "R2" is stored as r2. Total AGB is the sum of stump, stem, branches, twigs and leaves, so foliage is included. Wood density WD is the tree's sample-disc basic density (g/cm³). The rendered equation (10) shows "Y^1 = a × (WD × dbh² × ht)^b"; the superscript 1 on Y is read as a typesetting artefact.

## Checks this equation passes

On every build, the library's form and the source's own form (in its units) must both give these values within 1%.

| Inputs | Expected | We get | From |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| rho = 0.6, D = 20, H = 15 | 202 | 202 | Computed from the printed form: hand-computed from the published form |
| rho = 0.8, D = 50, H = 25 | 2,428 | 2,428 | Computed from the printed form: hand-computed from the published form |

The calculator on the page shows carbon as biomass × 0.47 (IPCC 2006 Guidelines, Vol. 4, Ch. 4, Table 4.3) and CO₂e as carbon × 44/12.
