# Dry miombo, total AGB, Trees (28 species), D and H

Aboveground biomass equation for Trees, 28 species, Tanzania, from Mwakalukwa et al. 2014. 72 trees, DBH 1.4–62 cm. Listed on Tree Allometrics, a free library of tree allometric equations, each quoted from the source that published it.

## Equation

As printed in Mwakalukwa et al. 2014 (Table 2, total biomass, model 3):

> Trees (N = 72); 28 species ... Total biomass (df = 69) 3 −3.1399 (0.123) 1.7586 (0.057) 1.2934 (0.115) 1.4–62 0.992 0.118 0.278 2.47

In this library's units, ready to compute (aboveground biomass in kg):

```
Aboveground biomass = 1.007 * exp(-3.1399 + 1.7586 * ln(D) + 1.2934 * ln(H))
```

Inputs: D = Diameter at breast height (1.3 m) (cm); H = Total tree height (m).
The source's own form: 1.007 * exp(-3.1399 + 1.7586 * ln(DBH) + 1.2934 * ln(HT)), with DBH in cm, HT in m; output in kg.

A missing fit statistic is one the source doesn't state, or that we haven't recorded; it is never estimated. Outside the stated DBH range or region, the equation is an extrapolation.

## The facts, in the source's words

**Equation** (Table 2, total biomass, model 3):

> Trees (N = 72); 28 species ... Total biomass (df = 69) 3 −3.1399 (0.123) 1.7586 (0.057) 1.2934 (0.115) 1.4–62 0.992 0.118 0.278 2.47

Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/mwakalukwa-2014-trees-dh/#equation

**Correction factor** (Section 2.5 (Sprugel correction)):

> CF = exp⁡(RMSE2/2), which was applied to the predicted values of volume and biomass

Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/mwakalukwa-2014-trees-dh/#quote-fit-cf

**Units** (Table 2 note):

> Y is volume (m3) or biomass (kg); Dbh is diameter at breast height (cm); ht is total height (m); and wd is wood density (kg m−3).

Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/mwakalukwa-2014-trees-dh/#quote-published-units

**Largest DBH** (Section 2.2 (study-wide)):

> The minimum and maximum sizes of sample trees/shrubs were 1.4 cm and 62.0 cm in diameter at breast height

Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/mwakalukwa-2014-trees-dh/#quote-fit-dbh-max-cm

**Our note:** ln-ln OLS (species models) or linear mixed model with species random effect (group models); total aboveground biomass is stump + stem and branches + twigs and leaves, so foliage is included. The paper states CF = exp(RMSE²/2) and that it was applied to predictions; the CF value (1.007) is not printed and is computed here from the printed RMSE (0.118) by that stated formula, and applied in both forms. The R² shown for group models is the likelihood-ratio R² named in the Table 2 note; for species models it is adjusted R².

## Checks this equation passes

On every build, the library's form and the source's own form (in its units) must both give these values within 1%.

| Inputs | Expected | We get | From |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| D = 20, H = 10 | 166 | 166 | Computed from the printed form: hand-computed from the published form |
| D = 40, H = 14 | 869 | 869 | Computed from the printed form: hand-computed from the published form |

The calculator on the page shows carbon as biomass × 0.47 (IPCC 2006 Guidelines, Vol. 4, Ch. 4, Table 4.3) and CO₂e as carbon × 44/12.
