# Willow (Salix spp.) foliage biomass, northern taiga, Arkhangelsk

Foliage biomass equation for Salix, Russia, from Paramonov et al. 2022. 52 trees. Listed on Tree Allometrics, a free library of tree allometric equations, each quoted from the source that published it.

## Equation

As printed in Paramonov et al. 2022 (Eq. 1 and Table 2):

> ln Pi = a0 + a1ln D (1); ln Pf –5,2760 1, 9644 0,633 0,435 (coefficients a0, a1, adjR2, SE)

In this library's units, ready to compute (foliage biomass in kg):

```
Foliage biomass = exp(-5.276 + 1.9644 * ln(D))
```

Inputs: D = Diameter at breast height (1.3 m) (cm).
The source's own form: exp(-5.276 + 1.9644 * ln(D)), with D in cm; output in kg.

## What it covers

- Output: Foliage biomass, kg
- Taxon: Salix (genus), family Salicaceae; broadleaf
- Where: Arkhangelsk region, northern taiga, Russia. Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/paramonov-2022-foliage/#where
- Biomes: boreal
- Stand: natural
- Trees measured: 52. Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/paramonov-2022-foliage/#n_trees
- Residual SE: 0.435. Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/paramonov-2022-foliage/#rse
- Method: static allometry ln Pi = a0 + a1 ln D, regression fitted in Statgraphics-19. Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/paramonov-2022-foliage/#method
- Verification: read in the original source

A missing fit statistic is one the source doesn't state, or that we haven't recorded; it is never estimated. Outside the stated DBH range or region, the equation is an extrapolation.

## The facts, in the source's words

**Equation** (Eq. 1 and Table 2):

> ln Pi = a0 + a1ln D (1); ln Pf –5,2760 1, 9644 0,633 0,435 (coefficients a0, a1, adjR2, SE)

**Trees measured** (Table 1 caption):

> Характеристика модельных деревьев ивы, взятых на 52 пробных площадях Архангельской области

**Our note:** Model ln Pi = a0 + a1 ln D with natural log (stated as ln); biomass Pi in kg oven-dry, D at breast height in cm. The paper states no back-transformation correction factor, so none is applied. The SE printed in Table 2 is used as rse. The paper reports adjusted R2 only, so r2 is omitted. n = 52 sample trees taken from the 52 plots in Table 1. Stem biomass is stem with bark ('Ps').

## Checks this equation passes

On every build, the library's form and the source's own form (in its units) must both give these values within 1%.

| Inputs | Expected | We get | From |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| D = 5 | 0.121 | 0.121 | Computed from the printed form: computed from the published form (coefficients as printed) |
| D = 8 | 0.304 | 0.304 | Computed from the printed form: computed from the published form (coefficients as printed) |

The calculator on the page shows carbon as biomass × 0.47 (IPCC 2006 Guidelines, Vol. 4, Ch. 4, Table 4.3) and CO₂e as carbon × 44/12.
