# Acacia mearnsii Total tree biomass from D and H (Table 3, model 1)

Total biomass equation for Acacia mearnsii, Ethiopia, from Shumie et al. 2024. 24 trees, DBH 1.1–11.9 cm. Listed on Tree Allometrics, a free library of tree allometric equations, each quoted from the source that published it.

## Equation

As printed in Shumie et al. 2024 (Table 3, Total biomass model 1):

> Total biomass 1. a + b(DH)c 2.25 0.02 1.69 97.82

Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/shumie-2024-total/#equation

In this library's units, ready to compute (total biomass in kg):

```
Total biomass = 2.25 + 0.02 * (D * H)^1.69
```

Inputs: D = Diameter at breast height (1.3 m) (cm); H = Total tree height (m).
The source's own form: 2.25 + 0.02 * (D * H)^1.69, with D in cm, H in m; output in kg.

- DBH range: 1.1–11.9 cm. Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/shumie-2024-total/#dbh
- Height range: 2.1–6.8 m. Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/shumie-2024-total/#height
- R²: 0.9782. Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/shumie-2024-total/#r2
- Method: nonlinear regression, form a + b(DH)^c. Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/shumie-2024-total/#method
- Verification: read in the original source

A missing fit statistic is one the source doesn't state, or that we haven't recorded; it is never estimated. Outside the stated DBH range or region, the equation is an extrapolation.

## The facts, in the source's words

**Equation** (Table 3, Total biomass model 1):

> Total biomass 1. a + b(DH)c 2.25 0.02 1.69 97.82

Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/shumie-2024-total/#equation

**Trees measured** (Abstract):

> twenty-four trees of varying ages (3, 4, 5, and 6 years) were harvested

Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/shumie-2024-total/#quote-fit-n-trees

**Smallest DBH** (Table 2):

> Tree parameters DBH (cm) 24 1.1 7.1 11.9; Height (m) 24 2.1 4.4 6.8 (n, min, mean, max)

Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/shumie-2024-total/#quote-fit-dbh-min-cm

**Our note:** Coefficients are printed to two decimals only, so predictions are coarse for small trees. D is DBH in cm, H in m, biomass in kg (Table 2). Trees aged 3 to 6 years. R2 printed as a percentage and converted to a fraction. Table 3 was read from the journal CSV download; the column order is a, b, c, R2, RMSE, MAD, AIC, p. Stem, AGB and total biomass model 1 are the best models per the authors. Branch and leaf models are not added (Table 3: R2 about 0.5 for branches and about 0.6 for leaves).

## Checks this equation passes

On every build, the library's form and the source's own form (in its units) must both give these values within 1%.

| Inputs | Expected | We get | From |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| D = 3, H = 2.5 | 2.85 | 2.85 | Computed from the printed form: computed from the published form |
| D = 7, H = 4.4 | 8.81 | 8.81 | Computed from the printed form: computed from the published form |
| D = 11, H = 6.5 | 29.5 | 29.5 | Computed from the printed form: computed from the published form |

The calculator on the page shows carbon as biomass × 0.47 (IPCC 2006 Guidelines, Vol. 4, Ch. 4, Table 4.3) and CO₂e as carbon × 44/12.
