# Sugar maple leaf biomass from DBH, managed stand (sugar bush)

Foliage biomass equation for Acer saccharum, Canada, from Ter-Mikaelian & Lautenschlager 2001. 10 trees, DBH 20.5–63.9 cm. Listed on Tree Allometrics, a free library of tree allometric equations, each quoted from the source that published it.

## Equation

As printed in Ter-Mikaelian & Lautenschlager 2001 (Fig. 2 caption (log form)):

> ln(LT) = -4.851 + 2.185*ln(DBH)

In this library's units, ready to compute (foliage biomass in kg):

```
Foliage biomass = 0.00798 * D^2.185
```

Inputs: D = Diameter at breast height (1.3 m) (cm).
The source's own form: 0.00798 * DBH^2.185, with DBH in cm; output in kg.

## What it covers

- Output: Foliage biomass, kg
- Taxon: Acer saccharum (species), family Sapindaceae; broadleaf
- Where: managed stand near Newburgh, eastern Ontario. Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/ter-mikaelian-2001-managed/#where
- Biomes: temperate
- Stand: natural
- Trees measured: 10. Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/ter-mikaelian-2001-managed/#n_trees
- DBH range: 20.5–63.9 cm. Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/ter-mikaelian-2001-managed/#dbh
- Height range: 18–27 m. Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/ter-mikaelian-2001-managed/#height
- R²: 0.94. Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/ter-mikaelian-2001-managed/#r2
- Method: log-linear regression, back-transformed by adding half the squared SEE to the intercept (Baskerville 1972). Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/ter-mikaelian-2001-managed/#method
- Verification: read in the original source
- Last checked: 2026-11-02. Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/ter-mikaelian-2001-managed/#checked_at

A missing fit statistic is one the source doesn't state, or that we haven't recorded; it is never estimated. Outside the stated DBH range or region, the equation is an extrapolation.

## The facts, in the source's words

**Equation** (Fig. 2 caption (log form)):

> ln(LT) = -4.851 + 2.185*ln(DBH)

Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/ter-mikaelian-2001-managed/#equation

**Equation** (Table 3, back-transformed equation, DBH only (text layer of the PDF is garbled; coefficients cross-checked against the Fig. 2 caption)):

> LT = 0.00798*DBH^2.185

Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/ter-mikaelian-2001-managed/#quote-expression

**Trees measured** (Data sampling):

> Twelve trees were sampled from an unmanaged stand north of Madoc and 10 from a managed stand near Newburg

Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/ter-mikaelian-2001-managed/#quote-fit-n-trees

**Our note:** Output is total leaf biomass only (oven-dried leaves, kg), not petioles or seeds. Table 3 coefficients are the back-transformed form with the bias correction already in the intercept. Hosts: sugar bushes slightly ice-damaged (<5%) in 2000. The 'managed' stand is a sap-production sugar bush, set as natural stand type (not planted); the paper does not give stand origin. R2 is the log-scale value printed in Table 3 and the Fig. 2 caption.

## Checks this equation passes

On every build, the library's form and the source's own form (in its units) must both give these values within 1%.

| Inputs | Expected | We get | From |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |

The calculator on the page shows carbon as biomass × 0.47 (IPCC 2006 Guidelines, Vol. 4, Ch. 4, Table 4.3) and CO₂e as carbon × 44/12.
