Stem biomass equation for Seven dominant species of Chilimo forest (Juniperus procera, Podocarpus falcatus, Olea africana, Allophylus abyssinicus, Olinia rochetiana, Rhus glutinosa, Scolopia theifolia), Ethiopia, from Teshome et al. 2022. 193 trees, DBH 6.2–85 cm. Listed on Tree Allometrics, a free library of tree allometric equations, each quoted from the source that published it.

Fitted on Juniperus procera, Podocarpus falcatus, Olea africana, Allophylus abyssinicus, Olinia rochetiana, Rhus glutinosa, Scolopia theifolia.

## Equation

As printed in Teshome et al. 2022 (Abstract):

> ln(b) = -2.983 + 0.949 * ln(ρ d^2 h)

In this library's units, ready to compute (stem biomass in kg):

```
Stem biomass = 1.001 * (exp(-2.983 + 0.949 * ln(rho * D^2 * H)))
```

Inputs: rho = Wood density (oven-dry mass / green volume) (g/cm³); D = Diameter at breast height (1.3 m) (cm); H = Total tree height (m).
The source's own form: exp(-2.983 + 0.949 * ln(rho * d^2 * h)), with d in cm, h in m, rho in g/cm3; output in kg.

A missing fit statistic is one the source doesn't state, or that we haven't recorded; it is never estimated. Outside the stated DBH range or region, the equation is an extrapolation.

## The facts, in the source's words

**Equation** (Abstract):

> ln(b) = -2.983 + 0.949 * ln(ρ d^2 h)

Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/teshome-2022-stembm-m10/#equation

**coefficients** (Table 6):

> M10 -2.983 0.949

Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/teshome-2022-stembm-m10/#quote-coefficients

**Trees measured** (Abstract):

> A total of 193 sampled trees from seven dominant tree species were used to develop the equations.

**DBH range** (Section 3.1):

> The diameter, total height, and wood density ranged between 6.2 and 85.0 cm, 5.6 and 27.4 m, and 0.52 and 0.82 g cm-3

**Correction factor** (Supplementary Table S4, p. 293):

> CF 1.001

**Our note:** Stem biomass only (branches and leaves not measured), computed as stem volume times basic wood density of each species, so dry mass. Range in fit is for the 194 sampled trees (Section 3.1). Back-transform CF 1.001 from Table S4 applied in expression.

## Checks this equation passes

On every build, the library's form and the source's own form (in its units) must both give these values within 1%.

| Inputs | Expected | We get | From |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| D = 20, H = 12, rho = 0.6 | 97.3 | 97.3 | Computed from the printed form: hand-computed from the published form; CF 1.001 applied |
| D = 50, H = 20, rho = 0.6 | 899 | 899 | Computed from the printed form: hand-computed from the published form; CF 1.001 applied |

The calculator on the page shows carbon as biomass × 0.47 (IPCC 2006 Guidelines, Vol. 4, Ch. 4, Table 4.3) and CO₂e as carbon × 44/12.
