# Desa'a multispecies AGB from DBH (M1)

Aboveground biomass equation for 10 dominant species of Desa'a forest, Ethiopia, from Tetemke et al. 2019. 86 trees, DBH 2.9–45.2 cm. Listed on Tree Allometrics, a free library of tree allometric equations, each quoted from the source that published it.

## Equation

As printed in Tetemke et al. 2019 (Table 3 (a, b, adj-R2, rRMSE, rBias, AIC)):

> M1 AGB = a × DBHb 0.298 2.034 0.935 74.6 4.4 64.2

In this library's units, ready to compute (aboveground biomass in kg):

```
Aboveground biomass = 0.298 * D^2.034
```

Inputs: D = Diameter at breast height (1.3 m) (cm).
The source's own form: 0.298 * DBH^2.034, with DBH in cm; output in kg.

## What it covers

- Output: Aboveground biomass, kg
- Taxon: 10 dominant species of Desa'a forest (mixed species); mixed
- Where: Desa'a dry Afromontane forest, Tigray. Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/tetemke-2019-m1-dbh/#where
- Biomes: montane, dryland
- Stand: natural
- Trees measured: 86. Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/tetemke-2019-m1-dbh/#n_trees
- DBH range: 2.9–45.2 cm. Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/tetemke-2019-m1-dbh/#dbh
- Method: Power function fitted on ln-transformed data. Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/tetemke-2019-m1-dbh/#method
- Verification: read in the original source
- Last checked: 2026-11-02. Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/tetemke-2019-m1-dbh/#checked_at

A missing fit statistic is one the source doesn't state, or that we haven't recorded; it is never estimated. Outside the stated DBH range or region, the equation is an extrapolation.

## The facts, in the source's words

**Equation** (Table 3 (a, b, adj-R2, rRMSE, rBias, AIC)):

> M1 AGB = a × DBHb 0.298 2.034 0.935 74.6 4.4 64.2

Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/tetemke-2019-m1-dbh/#equation

**Smallest DBH** (Table 1 (n, DSH mean and range, DBH mean and range)):

> All 86 14.8 4.9–51.0 12.8 2.9–45.2

Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/tetemke-2019-m1-dbh/#quote-fit-dbh-min-cm

**Our note:** Recommended by the authors for simplicity (DBH only), with M9 for stump diameter. Adjusted R2 0.935. The fits were done on ln-transformed data and the paper says predictions were back-transformed with a correction factor (CF from RSE) for its error statistics, but it does not print the CF or say whether the tabulated a already includes it; no cf is entered. Adjusted R2 is given in the notes, not fit.r2, because it is adjusted.

## Checks this equation passes

On every build, the library's form and the source's own form (in its units) must both give these values within 1%.

| Inputs | Expected | We get | From |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| D = 10 | 32.2 | 32.2 | Computed from the printed form: computed from the published form |
| D = 25 | 208 | 208 | Computed from the printed form: computed from the published form |

The calculator on the page shows carbon as biomass × 0.47 (IPCC 2006 Guidelines, Vol. 4, Ch. 4, Table 4.3) and CO₂e as carbon × 44/12.
