# Grey alder trunk wood (bark excluded) dry mass from DBH (general equation)

Stem biomass equation for Alnus incana, Russia, from Tretyakov et al. 2022. 21 trees, DBH 4–17 cm. Listed on Tree Allometrics, a free library of tree allometric equations, each quoted from the source that published it.

## Equation

As printed in Tretyakov et al. 2022 (Eq. 18, p. 68):

> M_wood a.d. = 0.0485 · D^2.5138, R² = 0.9196

In this library's units, ready to compute (stem biomass in kg):

```
Stem biomass = 0.0485 * D^2.5138
```

Inputs: D = Diameter at breast height (1.3 m) (cm).
The source's own form: 0.0485 * D^2.5138, with D in cm; output in kg.

## What it covers

- Output: Stem biomass, kg
- Taxon: Alnus incana (species), family Betulaceae; broadleaf
- Where: Arkhangelsk forestry, North-taiga region, Arkhangelsk oblast. Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/tretyakov-2022-wood/#where
- Biomes: boreal
- Stand: natural

- DBH range: 4–17 cm. Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/tretyakov-2022-wood/#dbh
- R²: 0.9196. Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/tretyakov-2022-wood/#r2
- Method: power regression on 21 model trees pooled over 4 stands. Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/tretyakov-2022-wood/#method
- Verification: read in the original source

A missing fit statistic is one the source doesn't state, or that we haven't recorded; it is never estimated. Outside the stated DBH range or region, the equation is an extrapolation.

## The facts, in the source's words

**Equation** (Eq. 18, p. 68):

> M_wood a.d. = 0.0485 · D^2.5138, R² = 0.9196

**Trees measured** (Abstract):

> A total of 21 model trees were studied

**DBH range** (Results, p. 68):

> которые работают при таксационных диаметрах от 4 до 17 см

**Our note:** General equation fitted on all 21 model trees from four grey alder stands. D is trunk diameter at 1.3 m (cm); output is absolutely dry mass in kg. The last digit of the exponent is clipped in the printed Eq. 20 and 21 (2.3413 and 2.0522 read from the PDF); Table 5 values reproduce within 1% across D = 4 to 16 cm. Per-stand equations in Table 1 are not included. Trunk bark (Eq. 19: 0.0144*D^2.1832, R2 0.7892) has no separate output quantity and is not included. Wood fraction excludes bark.

## Checks this equation passes

On every build, the library's form and the source's own form (in its units) must both give these values within 1%.

| Inputs | Expected | We get | From |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| D = 4 | 1.58 | 1.58 | Value printed in the paper: Table 5, p. 73 |
| D = 10 | 15.8 | 15.8 | Value printed in the paper: Table 5, p. 73 |
| D = 16 | 51.6 | 51.6 | Value printed in the paper: Table 5, p. 73 |

The calculator on the page shows carbon as biomass × 0.47 (IPCC 2006 Guidelines, Vol. 4, Ch. 4, Table 4.3) and CO₂e as carbon × 44/12.
