# Fagus generalised aboveground biomass, DBH (Eq. 10)

Aboveground biomass equation for Fagus, Global, from Zianis & Mencuccini 2003. Listed on Tree Allometrics, a free library of tree allometric equations, each quoted from the source that published it.

Fitted on Fagus grandifolia, Fagus sylvatica.

## Equation

As printed in Zianis & Mencuccini 2003 (Eq. 10, p. 444):

> lnMT = 2.456(0.05)lnD – 2.073(0.156)            (10)

Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/zianis-2003-eq10/#equation

In this library's units, ready to compute (aboveground biomass in kg):

```
Aboveground biomass = exp(-2.073 + 2.456 * ln(D) + 0.1551^2 / 2)
```

Inputs: D = Diameter at breast height (1.3 m) (cm).
The source's own form: exp(-2.073 + 2.456 * ln(D) + 0.1551^2 / 2), with D in cm; output in kg.

A missing fit statistic is one the source doesn't state, or that we haven't recorded; it is never estimated. Outside the stated DBH range or region, the equation is an extrapolation.

**Our note:** D is DBH in cm; output is kg dry biomass. The fitted inputs are synthetic class-mean predictions. The Greek and Spanish source equations were excluded so their raw trees could be used for validation. The printed SEE is squared and divided by 2 inside the exponent as specified in the methods; no separately printed multiplicative CF is stored. The fitted synthetic-D range is not stated.

## Checks this equation passes

On every build, the library's form and the source's own form (in its units) must both give these values within 1%.

| Inputs | Expected | We get | From |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| D = 20 | 200 | 200 | Computed from the printed form: Computed from the printed log-model coefficients and SEE²/2 correction. |

The calculator on the page shows carbon as biomass × 0.47 (IPCC 2006 Guidelines, Vol. 4, Ch. 4, Table 4.3) and CO₂e as carbon × 44/12.
