# Fagus moesiaca total foliage dry biomass, DBH and height (Eq. 4)

Foliage biomass equation for Fagus moesiaca, Greece, from Zianis & Mencuccini 2003. 16 trees, DBH 5.19–40.6 cm. Listed on Tree Allometrics, a free library of tree allometric equations, each quoted from the source that published it.

## Equation

As printed in Zianis & Mencuccini 2003 (Eq. 4, p. 442):

> MFT = 0.0001997(0.000012)D2H + 0.331(0.227), R2 = 0.9493

In this library's units, ready to compute (foliage biomass in kg):

```
Foliage biomass = 0.0001997 * D^2 * H + 0.331
```

Inputs: D = Diameter at breast height (1.3 m) (cm); H = Total tree height (m).
The source's own form: 0.0001997 * D^2 * H + 0.331, with D in cm, H in m; output in kg.

## What it covers

- Output: Foliage biomass, kg
- Taxon: Fagus moesiaca (species); broadleaf
- Where: Vermio Mountain, Northern Greece. Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/zianis-2003-eq4/#where
- Biomes: temperate
- Stand: natural
- Trees measured: 16. Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/zianis-2003-eq4/#n_trees
- DBH range: 5.19–40.6 cm. Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/zianis-2003-eq4/#dbh
- R²: 0.9493. Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/zianis-2003-eq4/#r2
- Verification: read in the original source
- Last checked: 2026-11-05. Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/zianis-2003-eq4/#checked_at

A missing fit statistic is one the source doesn't state, or that we haven't recorded; it is never estimated. Outside the stated DBH range or region, the equation is an extrapolation.

**Our note:** D is DBH at 1.3 m; H is measured total height. Parentheses in the paper give standard errors, not multiplication terms. This original-scale equation needs no log back-transform correction. The authors say adding height improved foliage predictions. Total foliage includes crown and epicormic foliage. The DBH range retained here is the methods' explicit 5.19–40.6 cm range (p. 441); the comparison section describes a largest Greek tree of 41.45 cm (p. 446). That sample-description discrepancy is not used to extend the reported range. No fitted height bounds are supplied.

## Checks this equation passes

On every build, the library's form and the source's own form (in its units) must both give these values within 1%.

| Inputs | Expected | We get | From |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| D = 20, H = 15 | 1.53 | 1.53 | Computed from the printed form: Computed from the printed equation; the sampled trees' height range is not reported. |

The calculator on the page shows carbon as biomass × 0.47 (IPCC 2006 Guidelines, Vol. 4, Ch. 4, Table 4.3) and CO₂e as carbon × 44/12.
