# Fagus moesiaca stem dry biomass within the crown, DBH (Table III lnMCS)

Stem biomass equation for Fagus moesiaca, Greece, from Zianis & Mencuccini 2003. 16 trees, DBH 5.19–40.6 cm. Listed on Tree Allometrics, a free library of tree allometric equations, each quoted from the source that published it.

## Equation

As printed in Zianis & Mencuccini 2003 (Table III, model in caption and lnMCS row, p. 442):

> lnMCS = ln a + b lnD; ln a = −4.0543, b = 2.2116

Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/zianis-2003-iii-mcs/#equation

In this library's units, ready to compute (stem biomass in kg):

```
Stem biomass = 1.1914 * exp(-4.0543 + 2.2116 * ln(D))
```

Inputs: D = Diameter at breast height (1.3 m) (cm).
The source's own form: 1.1914 * exp(-4.0543 + 2.2116 * ln(D)), with D in cm; output in kg.

A missing fit statistic is one the source doesn't state, or that we haven't recorded; it is never estimated. Outside the stated DBH range or region, the equation is an extrapolation.

**Our note:** D is DBH at 1.3 m. Multiply by Table III's CF once; it equals exp(SEE²/2), although the text calls SEE²/2 CF. Stem mass within the crown only, not whole-stem biomass. The retained 5.19–40.6 cm range is explicitly reported in the methods (p. 441); the later comparison describes a largest Greek tree of 41.45 cm (p. 446). That sample-description discrepancy is not used to extend the reported range.

## Checks this equation passes

On every build, the library's form and the source's own form (in its units) must both give these values within 1%.

| Inputs | Expected | We get | From |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| D = 20 | 15.6 | 15.6 | Computed from the printed form: Computed from Table III coefficients and CF. |

The calculator on the page shows carbon as biomass × 0.47 (IPCC 2006 Guidelines, Vol. 4, Ch. 4, Table 4.3) and CO₂e as carbon × 44/12.
