# Fagus moesiaca stem dry biomass, nonlinear DBH fit (Table IV Ms)

Stem biomass equation for Fagus moesiaca, Greece, from Zianis & Mencuccini 2003. 16 trees, DBH 5.19–40.6 cm. Listed on Tree Allometrics, a free library of tree allometric equations, each quoted from the source that published it.

## Equation

As printed in Zianis & Mencuccini 2003 (Table IV, model in caption and Ms row, p. 443):

> Ms = aDᵇ; a = 0.7568, b = 1.9536

In this library's units, ready to compute (stem biomass in kg):

```
Stem biomass = 0.7568 * D^1.9536
```

Inputs: D = Diameter at breast height (1.3 m) (cm).
The source's own form: 0.7568 * D^1.9536, with D in cm; output in kg.

A missing fit statistic is one the source doesn't state, or that we haven't recorded; it is never estimated. Outside the stated DBH range or region, the equation is an extrapolation.

**Our note:** D is DBH at 1.3 m. This original-scale nonlinear fit needs no log back-transformation correction. The authors report better SSE for nonlinear models, but lower MPD for the log models of total, stem and branch mass. The retained 5.19–40.6 cm range is explicitly reported in the methods (p. 441); the later comparison describes a largest Greek tree of 41.45 cm (p. 446). That sample-description discrepancy is not used to extend the reported range.

## Checks this equation passes

On every build, the library's form and the source's own form (in its units) must both give these values within 1%.

| Inputs | Expected | We get | From |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| D = 20 | 263 | 263 | Computed from the printed form: Computed from the Table IV nonlinear power fit. |

The calculator on the page shows carbon as biomass × 0.47 (IPCC 2006 Guidelines, Vol. 4, Ch. 4, Table 4.3) and CO₂e as carbon × 44/12.
