# Fagus generalised foliage biomass, DBH (Table V)

Foliage biomass equation for Fagus, Global, from Zianis & Mencuccini 2003. DBH 1–66 cm. Listed on Tree Allometrics, a free library of tree allometric equations, each quoted from the source that published it.

**Not fully checked:** The methods describe log-transformed generalized fits, but Table V gives neither SEE nor a correction factor for this component and does not establish whether its coefficient includes back-transform correction. This record uses the printed power function; verify correction handling before treating its output as mean foliage dry mass.

## Equation

As printed in Zianis & Mencuccini 2003 (Equation (1), model, p. 441; Table V, Foliage row, p. 446):

> Y = aXᵇ; a = 0.0188, b = 1.8169

In this library's units, ready to compute (foliage biomass in kg):

```
Foliage biomass = 0.0188 * D^1.8169
```

Inputs: D = Diameter at breast height (1.3 m) (cm).
The source's own form: 0.0188 * D^1.8169, with D in cm; output in kg.

- Output: Foliage biomass, kg
- Taxon: Fagus (genus); broadleaf
- Where: Europe and eastern North America (source equations). Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/zianis-2003-v-foliage/#where
- Biomes: not stated
- Stand: not stated
- DBH range: 1–66 cm. Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/zianis-2003-v-foliage/#dbh
- R²: 0.86. Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/zianis-2003-v-foliage/#r2
- Method: regression on predictions from published equations. Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/zianis-2003-v-foliage/#method
- Verification: read in the original source
- Last checked: 2026-11-05. Cite: https://treeallometry.org/equations/zianis-2003-v-foliage/#checked_at

A missing fit statistic is one the source doesn't state, or that we haven't recorded; it is never estimated. Outside the stated DBH range or region, the equation is an extrapolation.

**Our note:** D is DBH in cm; output is kg dry biomass. This is an original generalized fit to predictions from published equations, not a fit to independent harvested-tree observations. No additional correction can be calculated without SEE or CF. The 1–66 cm bounds are the domain explicitly reported in Table V, not extrema inferred from synthetic class means. The species used specifically for this component fit are not enumerated. Figure 4 describes validation refits excluding the Spanish and Greek equations; it does not print coefficients for those refits, so its plotted predictions are not substituted for Table V.

## Checks this equation passes

On every build, the library's form and the source's own form (in its units) must both give these values within 1%.

| Inputs | Expected | We get | From |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| D = 20 | 4.35 | 4.35 | Computed from the printed form: Computed from the Table V coefficients, without an unreported correction. |

The calculator on the page shows carbon as biomass × 0.47 (IPCC 2006 Guidelines, Vol. 4, Ch. 4, Table 4.3) and CO₂e as carbon × 44/12.
